Does your body ache from head to toe after a long day, leaving you wondering why simple activities feel so exhausting? If you have flat feet, your seemingly minor foot condition might be the culprit behind a cascade of health problems affecting your entire body. You’re not imagining the connection between your flat feet and that persistent back pain, knee discomfort, or chronic fatigue that plagues your daily life.
Living with flat feet isn’t just about having “unusual-looking” feet—it’s about dealing with a biomechanical imbalance that can wreak havoc on your posture, joints, and overall wellbeing. At Bucksfootclinic.com, we’ve witnessed countless patients discover that their flat feet were the missing piece in their health puzzle, and we’ve helped them reclaim their comfort and vitality through targeted treatment.
If you’re tired of feeling like your body is working against you, this comprehensive guide will reveal exactly how your flat feet are affecting your health and provide you with proven solutions that actually work.
Flat feet, medically known as pes planus or fallen arches, occur when the arches of your feet have collapsed or never properly developed. But here’s what most people don’t realise: your feet are the foundation of your entire body’s structural integrity. When this foundation is compromised, the effects ripple upward through your kinetic chain like dominoes falling in sequence.
The brutal reality is that flat feet affect approximately 20-30% of the UK population, yet most people remain completely unaware of how this condition is silently undermining their health. You might have attributed your various aches and pains to ageing, stress, or bad luck, never suspecting that your feet hold the key to your discomfort.
Your arch serves as a natural shock absorber, distributing weight evenly across your foot and providing the spring-like mechanism essential for efficient movement. When you have flat feet, this sophisticated system fails, forcing other parts of your body to compensate in ways they were never designed to handle.
Your Knees Are Screaming for Help (Even If You Can’t Hear Them Yet)
When your arches collapse, your feet roll inward excessively—a condition called overpronation. This seemingly minor change in foot position creates a chain reaction that rotates your lower legs inward, placing tremendous stress on your knee joints. Over time, this can lead to:
Many patients are astounded to discover that their mysterious knee pain completely resolves once their flat feet receive proper treatment and arch support.
The inward rotation caused by flat feet doesn’t stop at your knees—it continues up through your hips, creating pelvic misalignment that directly impacts your lower back. This biomechanical disaster manifests as:
Here’s the kicker: you might be spending hundreds of pounds on back pain treatments, physiotherapy, and pain medications when the real solution lies in addressing your flat feet.
Your Energy Levels Are Plummeting (And You Don’t Know Why)
Walking and standing with flat feet requires significantly more energy than moving with proper arch support. Your muscles work overtime to compensate for the lack of natural shock absorption, leading to:
The Flat Feet Epidemic: Why Your Condition Is Getting Worse
Modern lifestyle factors are making flat feet more problematic than ever before:
The Hard Surface Catastrophe: Our ancestors walked on natural, uneven surfaces that constantly challenged and strengthened their foot muscles. Today’s concrete pavements and flat floors provide no stimulation for arch development or maintenance.
The Footwear Disaster: Most modern shoes offer inadequate arch support and actually weaken your foot muscles over time. The popular trend of minimalist shoes can be particularly problematic for people with flat feet.
The Sedentary Lifestyle Effect: Prolonged sitting weakens the posterior chain muscles that support proper posture and foot function, exacerbating the problems caused by flat feet.
The Weight Factor: Increasing obesity rates place additional stress on already compromised foot structures, accelerating arch collapse and related health problems.
Not all flat feet are created equal, and understanding your specific type is crucial for effective treatment:
Flexible Flat Feet (The Shape-Shifter)
With flexible flat feet, your arch appears normal when you’re sitting or on your tiptoes but collapses when you bear weight. This type is more common and generally responds well to conservative treatment, including proper arch support.
Rigid Flat Feet (The Stubborn Structure)
Rigid flat feet maintain their flat appearance regardless of weight-bearing status. This condition often requires more intensive treatment and may involve structural abnormalities that developed during childhood.
Understanding which type you have determines everything from the kind of arch support you need to the treatment protocols that will be most effective for your situation.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth about arch support: those cheap insoles you picked up at the pharmacy are likely doing more harm than good. Generic arch supports are designed for average feet, but your flat feet require personalised solutions that address your specific biomechanical needs.
Poor-quality arch support can actually:
Professional-grade arch support, on the other hand, is engineered to:
Choosing to ignore your flat feet isn’t just about accepting current discomfort—it’s about inviting future health catastrophes:
Arthritis Acceleration: The abnormal stress patterns created by flat feet accelerate joint wear throughout your lower extremities. What might have been normal age-related changes become premature, painful arthritis.
Tendon Damage: The posterior tibial tendon, which helps maintain your arch, can become severely damaged from overuse, leading to adult-acquired flatfoot deformity that may require surgical intervention.
Neurological Complications: Chronic misalignment can lead to nerve compression syndromes, including tarsal tunnel syndrome and sciatica.
Cardiovascular Impact: The increased energy expenditure required to move with flat feet can contribute to earlier fatigue during exercise, potentially limiting your cardiovascular fitness and overall health.
The Foundation Phase: Immediate Stability and Pain Relief
Custom Orthotic Therapy: Professional-grade custom orthotics represent the gold standard in flat feet treatment. Unlike generic insoles, these devices are crafted specifically for your foot structure and biomechanical needs, providing:
Supportive Footwear Selection: The right shoes can make or break your treatment success. Key features include:
Targeted Exercise Therapy: Specific exercises can strengthen the muscles that support your arch and improve your overall foot function:
Manual Therapy Techniques: Hands-on treatments can address the soft tissue restrictions and joint dysfunction associated with flat feet:
Injection Therapy: When conservative treatments need additional support, targeted injections can provide:
Surgical Intervention: Reserved for severe cases that don’t respond to conservative treatment, surgical options can include:
Experience expert care at Bucks Foot Clinic and effectively manage your hip, knee, leg, back, and shoulder pain through comprehensive podiatric solutions.
Myth 1: “Flat feet are just cosmetic—they don’t cause real problems” Reality: Flat feet create biomechanical imbalances that can cause pain and dysfunction throughout your body.
Myth 2: “You’re born with flat feet and nothing can change them” Reality: While severe structural flat feet may not be completely correctable, proper treatment can significantly improve function and reduce symptoms.
Myth 3: “Over-the-counter arch supports are just as good as custom orthotics” Reality: Generic supports cannot address the specific biomechanical needs of individual patients and may actually cause additional problems.
Myth 4: “Surgery is the only real solution for flat feet” Reality: The vast majority of flat feet cases respond well to conservative treatment when properly implemented.
Myth 5: “Children will outgrow their flat feet” Reality: While some flexibility in young children’s arches is normal, persistent flat feet beyond age 6-8 usually require intervention.
Based on extensive clinical experience treating thousands of flat feet patients, here are five crucial steps you can take today to begin improving your condition:
Step out of the shower onto a piece of paper or cardboard. Examine your footprint—if you see most or all of your foot sole with little to no curve along the inside edge, you likely have flat feet. Take photos of both footprints from multiple angles to track changes over time and share with healthcare providers.
While waiting for professional treatment, purchase high-quality over-the-counter arch supports from a reputable manufacturer. Look for firm, supportive insoles rather than soft cushioning. Replace them in all your frequently worn shoes and avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces.
Perform these four exercises twice daily: towel curls (scrunch a towel with your toes for 30 seconds), calf raises (15-20 repetitions), arch doming (press your toes down while lifting your arch), and single-leg balance (hold for 30 seconds each foot). Consistency is more important than intensity.
Examine all your shoes for adequate arch support, firm heel counters, and overall structural integrity. Immediately retire any worn-out shoes, flip-flops, or unsupportive footwear. Invest in quality athletic shoes with built-in arch support for daily activities.
Keep a detailed log of pain levels, fatigue, and any activities that worsen or improve your symptoms. Note the time of day when symptoms are worst, which shoes provide the most comfort, and any other factors that seem relevant. This information is invaluable for treatment planning.
Recent research has revolutionised our understanding of flat feet treatment:
Biomechanical Studies: Advanced gait analysis technology shows exactly how flat feet alter movement patterns and identifies the most effective intervention points.
Muscle Activation Research: EMG studies reveal which muscles are overworking and which are underperforming in flat feet patients, guiding targeted exercise prescriptions.
Orthotic Effectiveness Data: Pressure mapping technology demonstrates how proper arch support redistributes forces and reduces stress on vulnerable structures.
Long-term Outcome Studies: Follow-up research shows that comprehensive flat feet treatment can prevent the development of secondary conditions like arthritis and tendon damage.
When standard evaluation isn’t sufficient, advanced diagnostic tools can provide crucial insights:
3D Gait Analysis: Comprehensive movement analysis that identifies subtle biomechanical abnormalities affecting your entire kinetic chain.
Pressure Mapping: Shows exactly how weight is distributed across your feet during standing and walking activities.
Advanced Imaging: MRI and CT scans can reveal structural abnormalities, tendon damage, or arthritis development.
Muscle Testing: Specialised testing to identify specific weaknesses that contribute to arch collapse.
The connection between physical discomfort and mental wellbeing is undeniable:
Activity Avoidance: Chronic pain from flat feet often leads to avoiding physical activities, which can contribute to depression and anxiety.
Sleep Disruption: Pain and discomfort can interfere with sleep quality, affecting mood and cognitive function.
Social Isolation: Limiting activities due to foot pain can reduce social interactions and negatively impact mental health.
Self-Image Issues: Visible foot deformities or walking difficulties can affect self-confidence and body image.
Addressing flat feet comprehensively often leads to improvements in mental health as patients regain their ability to participate fully in life activities.
Child Development: Early intervention in children showing signs of persistent flat feet can prevent future problems. Key indicators include frequent complaints of leg fatigue, unusual wear patterns on shoes, and visible arch collapse during weight-bearing.
Lifestyle Modifications: Simple changes can prevent flat feet from worsening:
Workplace Considerations: For those whose jobs require prolonged standing, proper footwear and anti-fatigue mats can significantly reduce stress on flat feet.
Ignoring flat feet isn’t just about enduring discomfort—it’s about facing escalating healthcare costs:
Direct Medical Costs: Treating secondary conditions like knee pain, back problems, and arthritis is far more expensive than addressing flat feet initially.
Lost Productivity: Chronic pain and fatigue reduce work efficiency and may lead to missed workdays.
Lifestyle Limitations: Avoiding activities due to discomfort can lead to decreased fitness, which carries its own health and financial implications.
Emergency Interventions: Severe cases may require emergency treatment for injuries caused by biomechanical imbalances.
Investing in proper flat feet treatment early saves money and preserves quality of life in the long term.
Living with flat feet doesn’t have to mean accepting a lifetime of discomfort and limitation. The combination of professional assessment, appropriate arch support, targeted exercises, and lifestyle modifications can dramatically improve your quality of life.
Every day you delay addressing your flat feet is another day of unnecessary suffering. Your body is remarkably adaptable, but it needs the right support and guidance to function optimally. The sooner you take action, the better your outcomes will be.
The first step towards transformation is acknowledging that you deserve better than constant discomfort and fatigue. Your flat feet may have been controlling your life, but they don’t have to continue doing so.

Are you tired of your feet aching after a long day, wondering if there’s something wrong with your shoes—or worse, with your feet themselves? The truth is, most foot discomfort isn’t inevitable or a sign of aging—it’s often a direct result of wearing improper footwear that doesn’t support your unique needs. At Bucks Foot Clinic, we’ve seen countless patients transform their daily comfort simply by learning how to choose proper footwear that truly supports their foot health.
Your feet carry you through approximately 7,500 steps every single day, covering roughly 110,000 miles in your lifetime—equivalent to walking around the Earth more than four times. Yet most people spend more time researching a new mobile phone than they do selecting the shoes that will support this incredible journey. This comprehensive guide will change that, providing you with the knowledge and confidence to make footwear choices that keep your feet comfortable, healthy, and pain-free for life.
Before we can choose the right shoes, we need to understand the remarkable complexity of your feet and how proper footwear supports their intricate function. Your feet aren’t just platforms for standing—they’re sophisticated biomechanical structures that absorb shock, provide stability, and propel you forward with every step.
Each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments working together in perfect harmony when properly supported. This complex structure creates natural arches that act as springs, absorbing the impact of each step and storing energy for the next movement.
Your feet are uniquely yours, with individual characteristics that affect how you walk, stand, and bear weight. Some people have high arches that require specific support, while others have flatter feet that need different accommodation. Understanding your foot type is the first step in selecting proper footwear that works with, rather than against, your natural biomechanics.
When shoes don’t properly support your feet, every step becomes a struggle against improper alignment and inadequate cushioning. This constant battle leads to fatigue, discomfort, and eventually more serious problems like bunions, plantar fasciitis, or knee and back pain.
Think of improper footwear as forcing your feet to work in an unnatural environment where they can’t function as designed. Over time, this stress accumulates, leading to the aches and pains that many people mistakenly accept as normal parts of aging or daily life.
The Hidden Cost of Wrong Footwear: Why Your Shoe Choices Matter More Than You Think
The impact of improper footwear extends far beyond simple foot discomfort. Poor shoe choices create a domino effect that can affect your entire body, influencing everything from your posture to your energy levels throughout the day.
The Ripple Effect: How Bad Shoes Affect Your Whole Body
Your Knees Pay the Price: Shoes that don’t provide proper support force your feet to roll inward or outward excessively, creating abnormal stress on your knee joints. This misalignment can lead to knee pain, increased wear on cartilage, and a higher risk of injury during physical activities.
Your Hips and Back Join the Struggle: When your feet aren’t properly supported, your entire kinetic chain compensates by making small adjustments that accumulate into significant problems. Poor footwear can contribute to hip pain, lower back discomfort, and even neck tension as your body struggles to maintain balance and alignment.
Your Energy Drains Away: Walking in unsupportive shoes requires significantly more muscular effort than moving in proper footwear. This extra work leads to faster fatigue, reduced endurance, and that heavy, tired feeling in your legs at the end of each day.
Structural Changes: Consistently wearing improper footwear can lead to permanent changes in foot structure, including bunions, hammertoes, and arch collapse that may require medical intervention to correct.
Chronic Pain Patterns: What starts as occasional discomfort can develop into chronic pain conditions that significantly impact your quality of life and ability to enjoy physical activities.
Activity Limitations: Many people gradually reduce their activity levels due to foot discomfort, not realising that proper footwear could eliminate their pain and restore their active lifestyle.
Decoding Proper Footwear: The Essential Elements Your Feet Need
Understanding what makes footwear truly supportive empowers you to make informed choices that prioritise your foot health without sacrificing style or personal preferences.
Arch Support That Actually Supports: Proper footwear includes built-in arch support that matches your foot’s natural contours and helps maintain proper alignment during movement. This support should feel comfortable and natural, not forced or uncomfortable.
Heel Counter Stability: The back portion of your shoe should provide firm support around your heel, preventing excessive movement that can lead to blisters, instability, and inefficient gait patterns.
Adequate Toe Box Space: Your toes need room to spread naturally without being compressed or forced into unnatural positions. Proper toe box design prevents bunions, hammertoes, and ingrown toenails while allowing natural foot function.
Cushioning in the Right Places: Effective shock absorption in the heel and forefoot areas reduces the impact forces transmitted through your legs and spine with each step.
Durable Materials: Proper footwear uses high-quality materials that maintain their supportive properties over time rather than breaking down quickly and losing effectiveness.
Flexible Yet Supportive Design: Good shoes bend at the right places (the ball of your foot) while remaining stable in areas that need support (the arch and heel).
Breathable Construction: Proper footwear allows air circulation to keep your feet dry and comfortable, preventing the moisture buildup that can lead to fungal infections and odour.
Choosing proper footwear isn’t about finding the most expensive shoes—it’s about finding the right shoes for your unique feet and lifestyle. This systematic approach ensures you make choices that truly support your foot health.
Know Your Feet: The Essential First Step
Measure Both Feet Properly: Your feet may be different sizes, and they can change over time due to age, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or medical conditions. Always have both feet measured by a professional, and buy shoes to fit your larger foot.
Understand Your Arch Type: Simple tests can help you determine whether you have low, normal, or high arches. This information guides your selection of appropriate support features and helps prevent problems before they develop.
Identify Your Gait Pattern: How you walk affects what type of support you need from your footwear. Professional gait analysis can identify specific needs that influence your shoe selection.
Consider Your Activities: Different activities place different demands on your feet and require specific types of support and protection. Your walking shoes, work shoes, and athletic shoes all need different features.
Time Your Shopping Right: Shop for shoes in the afternoon or evening when your feet are at their largest due to natural swelling throughout the day. This ensures a proper fit when your feet are most expanded.
Bring Your Own Socks: Wear or bring the type of socks you’ll typically wear with the shoes you’re buying. Thick athletic socks require more room than thin dress socks.
Test Both Feet: Always try on both shoes and walk around the store to assess comfort, support, and fit. Don’t rely on assuming that if one shoe fits, the other will too.
Check All the Pressure Points: Pay attention to how the shoes feel at your heel, arch, ball of foot, and toes. Any pressure or discomfort during fitting will likely worsen with extended wear.
Your footwear needs evolve throughout your life, and understanding these changes helps you make appropriate choices that support your feet through every stage and activity.
Footwear Wisdom for the Working World
Office Warriors and Desk Jobs: Even if you sit most of the day, your commute and daily movement require supportive footwear. Consider keeping comfortable walking shoes at your office for breaks and lunch walks.
Healthcare Heroes and Service Industry: Jobs requiring prolonged standing demand exceptional support and cushioning. Look for shoes specifically designed for healthcare workers or others who spend long hours on their feet.
Construction and Manual Labour: Safety shoes can still provide proper support and comfort when chosen carefully. Don’t assume that protective footwear has to be uncomfortable or unsupportive.
Retail and Teaching Professionals: Constant movement on hard surfaces requires shoes that provide both support and shock absorption while maintaining a professional appearance.
Experience expert care at Bucks Foot Clinic and effectively manage your hip, knee, leg, back, and shoulder pain through comprehensive podiatric solutions.
Sport-Specific Needs: Different sports create different stresses on your feet and require specialised footwear designed for those specific movements and impact patterns.
Cross-Training Considerations: If you participate in multiple activities, invest in sport-specific shoes rather than trying to use one pair for everything. Your feet will thank you for the targeted support.
Walking and Hiking: Distance walking requires shoes with excellent arch support, heel cushioning, and toe protection to prevent fatigue and injury over long distances.
Gym and Fitness Activities: Weight training, cardio, and group fitness classes each benefit from different types of support and stability features.
Children and Teenagers: Growing feet need shoes that accommodate rapid changes while providing proper support for developing bone and muscle structures.
Active Adults: Balancing style, comfort, and support becomes crucial as daily activities and fashion preferences intersect with foot health needs.
Mature Adults: Changes in foot structure, circulation, and mobility may require adjustments in footwear choices to maintain comfort and safety.
Senior Considerations: Easy-on styles, extra cushioning, and stability features become increasingly important for maintaining independence and preventing falls.
The Science Behind Supportive Footwear: Why Proper Construction Matters
Understanding the biomechanical principles behind proper footwear helps you make informed decisions and recognize quality construction when you see it.
The Gait Cycle: Each step involves a complex sequence of movements from heel strike through toe-off. Proper footwear supports each phase of this cycle, promoting efficient movement and reducing stress.
Pressure Distribution: During walking, your foot experiences forces equal to 1.5 times your body weight with each step. Proper footwear helps distribute these forces evenly rather than concentrating them in problematic areas.
Shock Absorption: Your feet and legs absorb tremendous impact forces with every step. Quality footwear provides additional shock absorption to reduce the stress transmitted through your skeletal system.
Midsole Technology: Modern cushioning materials can provide targeted support and shock absorption while maintaining durability and responsiveness.
Upper Construction: The way shoes are assembled affects both comfort and support, with quality construction providing better fit and longer-lasting performance.
Outsole Design: Tread patterns and rubber compounds affect traction, durability, and the way forces are transmitted through your foot during movement.
Even well-intentioned shoe purchases can go wrong when common misconceptions guide your choices. Understanding these pitfalls helps you avoid expensive mistakes and foot problems.
The “Breaking In” Myth That Hurts Your Feet
Proper Footwear Should Feel Good Immediately: Quality shoes that fit correctly should be comfortable from the first wear. The idea that shoes need to be “broken in” often indicates poor fit or inadequate design.
Pain Is Never Normal: Any discomfort during initial wear suggests that the shoes aren’t right for your feet. Don’t expect pain to improve with time—it usually worsens.
Your Feet Shouldn’t Have to Adapt: Good shoes adapt to your feet, not the other way around. Forcing your feet to accommodate poorly fitting shoes leads to problems over time.
Size Numbers Are Just Starting Points: Shoe sizes vary significantly between brands and styles. Always prioritise fit over the number on the box.
Width Matters as Much as Length: Many foot problems stem from wearing shoes that are the right length but wrong width. Don’t ignore width measurements in favour of length alone.
Your Size Changes Over Time: Feet can change due to age, weight, pregnancy, and medical conditions. Don’t assume you wear the same size you did five years ago.
Fashion Doesn’t Have to Mean Pain: Modern shoe design has created attractive options that also provide excellent support and comfort. You don’t have to choose between style and foot health.
Occasional Compromise Is Different from Daily Damage: Wearing less supportive shoes occasionally for special events is different from daily wear that gradually damages your foot health.
Investment in Quality Pays Dividends: Well-made, supportive shoes last longer and provide better value than cheap shoes that need frequent replacement and cause foot problems.
Experience expert care at Bucks Foot Clinic and effectively manage your hip, knee, leg, back, and shoulder pain through comprehensive podiatric solutions.
Here are five essential steps you can take immediately to transform your footwear choices and support your long-term foot health:
Examine every pair of shoes in your closet and honestly assess their condition and support features. Remove any shoes that are worn out, poorly fitting, or causing discomfort. Look for signs of uneven wear patterns, collapsed support structures, or compressed cushioning. Take photos of your feet in problematic shoes to document poor fit. This audit will likely reveal why you’ve been experiencing foot discomfort and will prevent you from continuing to wear damaging footwear.
Schedule an appointment with a qualified professional to have both feet properly measured and your walking pattern assessed. This evaluation should include length, width, arch height, and any biomechanical issues that affect your footwear needs. Don’t rely on old measurements or assume your feet haven’t changed.
Why is proper footwear important?
Proper footwear provides support, cushioning, and protection, preventing foot problems like pain, blisters, bunions, and conditions that affect your entire body.
What should I look for when buying shoes?
Good arch support, adequate cushioning, proper fit with toe room, breathable materials, firm heel counter, and flexibility at the ball of the foot.
When is the best time to shop for shoes?
Late afternoon or evening when your feet are naturally swollen to their largest size, ensuring a comfortable fit throughout the day.
How should shoes fit properly?
Half-inch space between longest toe and shoe end, snug heel without slipping, comfortable width without squeezing, and no immediate break-in pain needed.
Should I measure my feet before buying shoes?
Yes. Feet can change size over time due to age, weight, pregnancy, or medical conditions. Measure both feet and fit to the larger one.
What’s wrong with wearing the same shoes every day?
It doesn’t allow shoes to dry out properly, increases wear and tear, can cause odor buildup, and provides no variety in support patterns.
How often should I replace my shoes?
Every 300-500 miles for athletic shoes, or every 6-12 months for daily wear shoes, or when you notice worn treads and decreased cushioning.
Are high heels bad for my feet?
Yes, when worn frequently. They shift weight forward, compress toes, strain the Achilles tendon, and can cause bunions, hammertoes, and chronic pain.
What’s the problem with flip-flops?
They lack arch support, provide no ankle stability, offer minimal cushioning, and cause your toes to grip excessively, leading to fatigue and pain.
Are flat shoes without support okay?
No. Shoes like ballet flats without arch support can lead to plantar fasciitis, heel pain, and excessive strain on foot structures.
What makes a good athletic shoe?
Sport-specific design, adequate cushioning, proper arch support, breathable materials, good traction, and appropriate fit for your foot type and gait.
Do I need different shoes for different activities?
Yes. Running shoes for running, walking shoes for walking, cross-trainers for gym workouts. Each provides specific support for different movements.
What are the best materials for shoes?

Understanding Your Feet: Why Diabetes Requires Special Attention
When you have diabetes, your feet need a little extra love and attention—and that’s perfectly okay. Diabetes affects approximately 4.9 million people in the UK, and each person’s experience is unique. What matters most is understanding how diabetes affects your feet so you can take proactive steps to keep them healthy.
Diabetes can affect your feet in two primary ways, but please remember that understanding these changes empowers you to prevent problems before they start:
Reduced Blood Flow (Peripheral Arterial Disease): Diabetes can narrow the blood vessels in your legs and feet, reducing the oxygen and nutrients your tissues need to stay healthy. This doesn’t mean something terrible will happen—it simply means we need to be more thoughtful about circulation and healing.
Nerve Changes (Diabetic Neuropathy): Over time, diabetes may affect the nerves in your feet, which can reduce sensation. While this might sound frightening, many people with diabetes live comfortably with nerve changes by adapting their daily care routine.
These changes develop gradually, and with proper diabetic foot care, you can maintain your quality of life and continue doing the activities you love.
The Gentle Truth About Diabetic Foot Care: It’s Simpler Than You Think
We often meet patients who feel anxious about diabetic foot care, worried that it’s complicated or time-consuming. The truth is, effective diabetic foot care is built on simple, gentle habits that can easily become part of your daily routine. You don’t need to become a medical expert—you just need to become an expert on your own feet.
Think of diabetic foot care as a form of self-kindness. Just as you brush your teeth each morning, caring for your feet becomes a loving ritual that protects your health and preserves your independence. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s consistency and awareness.
Begin each day by giving your feet a gentle once-over. Sit comfortably and examine each foot, looking for:
If you have difficulty seeing the bottom of your feet, use a small mirror or ask a family member to help. There’s no shame in needing assistance—in fact, involving loved ones in your care creates a supportive network that benefits everyone.
Wash your feet daily with warm (not hot) water and mild soap. Test the water temperature with your elbow or a thermometer—it should feel comfortably warm, around 37°C. Soak for no more than 10 minutes, as prolonged soaking can actually soften skin too much and increase injury risk.
Gently pat your feet dry with a soft towel, paying special attention to the areas between your toes. Moisture trapped between toes can lead to fungal infections, but this is easily prevented with thorough, gentle drying.
Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to your feet daily, but avoid putting lotion between your toes. Think of moisturising as giving your feet a protective barrier against dryness and cracking. Choose products specifically designed for diabetic foot care when possible, as these are formulated with your unique needs in mind.
If you notice any areas of excessive dryness or cracking, don’t ignore them. These small changes are your feet’s way of asking for extra attention, and addressing them early prevents bigger problems later.
The Foundation of Foot Health: Proper Shoes
Your shoes are your feet’s best friends, so choose them carefully. Look for shoes that:
Avoid shoes that are too tight, too loose, or have pointed toes. High heels and flip-flops aren’t ideal for diabetic foot care, as they can create pressure points and increase injury risk.
Choose socks that are:
Diabetic socks are specially designed to reduce pressure points and improve circulation. While they might cost a bit more than regular socks, consider them an investment in your foot health and comfort.
Breaking in New Shoes: Patience and Care
When you get new shoes, break them in gradually. Wear them for short periods initially, checking your feet frequently for any red marks or sore spots. Your feet will thank you for this gentle approach, and you’ll avoid the discomfort of blisters or pressure sores.
Foot ulcers prevention is one of the most important aspects of diabetic foot care, but please don’t let this concern cause you anxiety. Ulcers are largely preventable with proper care, and understanding how to prevent them empowers you to take control of your health.
What Are Foot Ulcers?
Foot ulcers are open wounds that can develop when there’s continuous pressure on the same area of your foot, especially if you have reduced sensation. They most commonly occur on the ball of the foot or the bottom of the big toe—areas that bear weight when you walk.
The good news is that foot ulcers prevention is absolutely achievable with the right approach. By following proper diabetic foot care routines, most people with diabetes never develop ulcers.
Pressure Relief: Avoid walking barefoot, even indoors. Always wear properly fitting shoes or supportive slippers. When sitting, elevate your feet when possible to improve circulation.
Daily Inspection: Look for any red areas, blisters, or sore spots that could develop into ulcers. Early detection means easy treatment.
Proper Nail Care: Keep toenails trimmed straight across and not too short. If you have difficulty cutting your nails safely, ask a family member to help or visit a podiatrist.
Manage Your Blood Sugar: While this might seem obvious, maintaining good blood sugar control is crucial for foot ulcers prevention. When your blood sugar is well-controlled, your body heals better and faster.
Please remember that seeking professional help is a sign of good self-care, not weakness. At Bucksfootclinic.com, we consider ourselves partners in your health journey, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Warning Signs That Need Immediate Attention
Contact a healthcare professional if you notice:
These symptoms don’t mean something terrible is happening—they simply mean your feet need professional attention to prevent complications.
Even when your feet feel fine, regular check-ups with a podiatrist are an important part of diabetic foot care. Think of these appointments as maintenance visits, similar to servicing your car. They help catch small issues before they become bigger problems.
During these visits, your podiatrist can:
Good circulation is like giving your feet a constant supply of nutrients and oxygen. Here are gentle ways to improve circulation:
Simple Exercises for Better Blood Flow
Ankle Circles: While sitting, lift one foot and slowly rotate your ankle clockwise, then anticlockwise. Repeat 10 times each direction, then switch feet.
Toe Wiggles: Simply wiggle your toes throughout the day. This simple movement promotes blood flow and can be done anywhere.
Calf Raises: If you’re able to stand safely, rise up on your tiptoes and lower back down slowly. This exercise helps pump blood back up to your heart.
Walking: Even a gentle 10-minute walk can significantly improve circulation. If walking outdoors isn’t possible, walking around your home counts too.
Elevate Your Feet: When sitting, prop your feet up on a footstool or ottoman. This simple position helps blood flow back to your heart.
Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration helps maintain healthy blood flow throughout your body.
Avoid Smoking: If you smoke, consider this another reason to quit. Smoking significantly reduces circulation to your feet.
Manage Stress: Chronic stress can affect circulation, so finding healthy ways to manage stress benefits your entire body, including your feet.
Here are five gentle but powerful steps you can take immediately to improve your diabetic foot care routine:
Set aside 10 minutes each morning and evening for foot care. Make it a peaceful, mindful time—perhaps while listening to calming music or after your morning coffee. Check your feet each morning, wash them gently, and moisturise daily. This isn’t a chore; it’s a loving act of self-care that protects your health and independence.
Schedule a professional shoe fitting at a store that specialises in diabetic footwear. Measure both feet (they may be different sizes) and shop for shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest. Purchase at least two pairs of well-fitting shoes so you can alternate between them, allowing each pair to air out completely.
Share your diabetic foot care routine with family members or close friends. Teach them what to look for during foot inspections and ask for help when needed. Having someone check areas you can’t see easily isn’t admitting weakness—it’s being smart about your health. Consider joining a diabetes support group where you can share experiences and learn from others.
Work closely with your healthcare team to optimise your blood sugar control. Keep a simple log of your blood sugar readings and note any patterns. Good blood sugar control is the foundation of effective foot ulcers prevention and overall diabetic foot care. Celebrate small improvements—every step towards better control helps your feet heal and stay healthy.
Book regular appointments with a podiatrist who specialises in diabetic foot care, even when your feet feel fine. Aim for check-ups every 3-6 months, or more frequently if recommended. Between visits, maintain a relationship with your GP and diabetes care team. Having professionals who know your feet and your health history provides invaluable peace of mind.
Living with diabetes can sometimes feel isolating or overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to feel anxious about foot complications. Please know that these feelings are valid, and you’re not alone in experiencing them.
Many of our patients initially feel scared or frustrated about their diagnosis, but over time, they discover that managing diabetes becomes second nature. You have more control over your health than you might realise, and every positive step you take makes a difference.
The more you understand about diabetic foot care, the more confident you’ll feel. Knowledge transforms fear into empowerment. You don’t need to become a medical expert, but understanding your feet and how to care for them properly gives you tremendous power over your health outcomes.
Celebrating Small Victories
Every day that you check your feet, every time you choose supportive shoes, every moment you manage your blood sugar well—these are victories worth celebrating. Progress isn’t always dramatic; often, it’s found in the quiet consistency of good self-care.
Custom Orthotics: Personalised Comfort
For some people with diabetes, custom orthotics provide additional protection by redistributing pressure across the foot. These specially designed insoles can help prevent hot spots and reduce the risk of ulcer development. If you’re experiencing recurring pressure points or discomfort, custom orthotics might be an excellent addition to your diabetic foot care routine.
Specialized Footwear: Beyond Regular Shoes
In some cases, therapeutic footwear designed specifically for diabetic foot care provides superior protection. These shoes often feature:
Don’t think of therapeutic footwear as limiting—think of it as liberating. The right shoes can help you stay active and comfortable while protecting your feet.
Wound Care Technology: Healing Support
If you do develop a wound, advanced wound care technologies can accelerate healing and prevent complications. These might include:
The key is early intervention. The sooner you address any foot problems, the more treatment options are available and the better your outcomes will be.
What you eat directly affects your foot health, and making nutritious choices is another way to show your feet love and care.
Foods That Support Healing
Protein: Essential for tissue repair and wound healing. Include lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes, and dairy products in your diet.
Vitamin C: Supports collagen production and immune function. Citrus fruits, berries, and leafy greens are excellent sources.
Zinc: Important for wound healing and immune function. Found in oysters, beef, pumpkin seeds, and chickpeas.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Help reduce inflammation and support circulation. Fatty fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds are good sources.
Staying Hydrated
Proper hydration supports circulation and helps your body transport nutrients to your feet. Aim for 8-10 glasses of water daily, and remember that herbal teas and water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables also contribute to your hydration.
Modern technology is making diabetic foot care easier and more effective than ever before. Here are some innovations that might benefit you:
Smartphone Apps for Monitoring
Several apps can help you track your blood sugar, foot inspections, and appointment schedules. Some even use your phone’s camera to help document changes in your feet over time.
Smart Socks and Insoles
These innovative products can monitor temperature and pressure in your feet, alerting you to potential problem areas before they become serious.
Telemedicine Options
Remote consultations can help you get professional advice without travelling, especially useful for routine check-ups or when you have concerns between appointments.
Remember, technology is a tool to support your care, not replace the fundamental importance of daily foot inspection and proper self-care.

Why are feet important for people with diabetes?
Diabetes can cause nerve damage and poor circulation, reducing sensation and healing ability, making feet vulnerable to unnoticed injuries and serious complications.
What is diabetic neuropathy?
Nerve damage caused by high blood sugar that reduces sensation in the feet, making it difficult to feel pain, temperature, or injuries.
How does diabetes affect circulation?
High blood sugar damages blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the feet, which slows healing and increases infection risk.
What are common diabetic foot problems?
Ulcers, infections, calluses, corns, fungal infections, ingrown toenails, dry cracked skin, and in severe cases, gangrene requiring amputation.
How often should I inspect my feet?
Daily. Check for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, bruises, or any changes in color, temperature, or skin condition.
What should I look for during foot inspections?
Cuts, blisters, red spots, swelling, ingrown toenails, cracked or dry skin, calluses, corns, changes in color or temperature, and any unusual odors.
How should I wash my feet?
Daily with lukewarm water and mild soap. Test water temperature with your elbow, pat feet dry gently, especially between toes.
Should I moisturize my feet?
Yes, but avoid applying lotion between toes where moisture can cause fungal infections. Use daily on dry areas to prevent cracking.
How should I trim my toenails?
Cut straight across, not too short, and file edges smooth. If you have vision problems or neuropathy, see a podiatrist for nail care.
What type of shoes should diabetics wear?
Well-fitting shoes with soft interiors, no seams that rub, roomy toe boxes, good support, and closed toes for protection.
Should I ever go barefoot?
No. Always wear shoes or slippers, even indoors, to protect feet from injuries, temperature extremes, and foreign objects you might not feel.
What socks are best for diabetics?
Seamless, non-binding socks made of moisture-wicking materials that cushion feet without restricting circulation. Avoid tight elastic tops.
How can I improve circulation in my feet?
Keep blood sugar controlled, exercise regularly, don’t smoke, elevate feet when sitting, avoid crossing legs, and wear proper footwear.
What should I do if I get a cut or blister?
Wash gently with soap and water, apply antibiotic ointment, cover with sterile bandage, and contact your podiatrist immediately, even for minor wounds.
When should I see a podiatrist?
At least annually for checkups, and immediately for any wounds, infections, color changes, pain, numbness, or concerning foot changes.
Can I use heating pads or hot water bottles?
No. Reduced sensation means you can’t feel burns. Use warm socks instead and test water temperature with your elbow, not your feet.
Should I remove corns or calluses myself?
Never. Do not use sharp objects, chemical removers, or medicated pads. See a podiatrist for safe professional treatment.
What’s a diabetic foot ulcer?
An open sore or wound that develops on the foot, often from unnoticed pressure or injury, and heals slowly due to poor circulation.
How can I prevent diabetic foot ulcers?
Control blood sugar, inspect feet daily, wear proper footwear, keep feet clean and moisturized, and see a podiatrist regularly.
What role does blood sugar control play?
Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels prevents nerve damage, improves circulation, enhances healing, and reduces overall complication risk.
Are diabetic foot complications preventable?
Yes. With proper daily care, regular medical checkups, good blood sugar control, and appropriate footwear, most complications are preventable.
Spot the Signs and Learn About Prevention and Treatment Options
Are you noticing discomfort or a bump forming at the base of your big toe? You might be wondering if it’s a bunion. Bunions are a common cause of foot pain, and understanding them early can help prevent unnecessary discomfort. At Bucksfootclinic.com, we are here to guide you through the signs, causes, and solutions for bunions. This article will educate you on prevention, treatment options, and actionable steps to keep your feet healthy.
A bunion is more than just a bump on your toe—it’s a structural issue that occurs when the big toe joint becomes misaligned. This misalignment causes the big toe to lean toward the others, often leading to visible swelling and foot pain. If you’ve experienced soreness or noticed a change in your foot’s appearance, it might be time to consider whether you have a bunion.
What causes bunions? Here are the most common factors:
Catch the signs early, and you can address the issue before it worsens!
If you’re unsure whether you have a bunion, these common symptoms can help you identify the problem:
If these symptoms sound familiar, it’s time to take action. A podiatrist can provide clarity and recommend the best solutions for your feet.
Even if bunions run in your family, there are steps you can take to minimise your risk and ensure foot health:
Choose footwear with a wide toe box to avoid pressure on your toes. Ditch the high heels and pointed shoes for more supportive options with proper arch support and cushioning.
Excess weight places undue stress on your feet, increasing the risk of bunions. Keeping active and eating a balanced diet can alleviate this pressure.
Regularly clean and moisturise your feet to prevent skin issues that could exacerbate bunion discomfort. Keep an eye out for any changes in foot structure and seek professional advice if needed.
Orthotic devices, such as specially designed insoles, help align your feet and distribute weight evenly. They’re particularly useful for people with flat feet or other structural concerns.
Simple exercises, like toe stretches and picking up small objects with your toes, can strengthen foot muscles and improve stability. Stronger muscles can keep bunions at bay.
If you suspect you already have a bunion, don’t worry—effective treatment is available. Based on the severity, treatments range from non-invasive methods to surgical solutions:
If your bunion is mild, start with these options to manage discomfort:
For severe bunions causing chronic pain or difficulty walking, surgical options may be necessary:
A podiatrist can help you decide which treatment is best for your specific needs.
If you think you might have a bunion—or you’re experiencing persistent foot pain—the sooner you consult a podiatrist, the better. Early intervention can prevent complications and help you maintain mobility and comfort.

What is a bunion?
A bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe joint when the toe pushes against the next toe, causing the joint to stick out.
What causes bunions?
Genetics, tight or narrow shoes, high heels, foot injuries, arthritis, abnormal foot structure, and conditions affecting joints and connective tissue.
Are bunions hereditary?
Yes. Inherited foot structure and mechanics play a significant role, making bunions more likely if family members have them.
What are the symptoms of bunions?
Visible bump on big toe joint, pain or soreness, redness and inflammation, restricted toe movement, corns or calluses, and difficulty wearing shoes.
Do high heels cause bunions?
High heels don’t directly cause bunions but can worsen existing conditions and accelerate their development by forcing toes into narrow spaces.
Can bunions get worse over time?
Yes. Bunions are progressive deformities that typically worsen without proper care, making early intervention important.
What should I do if I notice a bunion forming?
Switch to properly fitted shoes with wide toe boxes, use protective padding, consider orthotics, and consult a podiatrist for early treatment.
What type of shoes should I wear?
Wide toe boxes, low heels, soft materials, good arch support, and adequate depth. Avoid pointed toes, narrow shoes, and high heels.
Can bunion pads help?
Yes. Cushioning pads and toe spacers can reduce friction, relieve pressure, prevent rubbing, and provide temporary pain relief.
Do orthotics help with bunions?
Yes. Custom orthotics can improve foot alignment, redistribute pressure, slow progression, and reduce pain, though they won’t eliminate existing bunions.
What home remedies provide relief?
Ice packs for inflammation, padding and taping, proper footwear, toe exercises, over-the-counter pain relievers, and avoiding aggravating activities.
Should I use a bunion splint?
Splints may provide temporary relief and help maintain alignment at night, but they won’t correct the deformity permanently.
What exercises help bunions?
Toe stretches, toe curls, marble pickups, resistance band exercises, and gentle joint mobilization can maintain flexibility and strength.
When should I see a podiatrist?
If you experience persistent pain, difficulty walking, progressive deformity, restricted movement, or if self-care measures aren’t helping.
What professional treatments are available?
Custom orthotics, padding techniques, anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgery.
Is bunion surgery necessary?
Surgery is only recommended when conservative treatments fail and pain significantly interferes with daily activities and quality of life.
What does bunion surgery involve?
Realigning the bone, removing excess tissue, and correcting the toe position. Recovery typically takes several weeks to months.
Can bunions come back after surgery?
Yes, if underlying causes like improper footwear or genetic factors aren’t addressed, bunions can recur even after surgical correction.
How can I prevent bunions?
Wear properly fitted shoes with adequate toe room, avoid high heels and pointed toes, maintain healthy weight, and addr
Heel Pain Treatment Solutions | Bucks Foot Clinic
Uncover the causes of heel pain, including plantar fasciitis and heel spurs, and explore effective treatment options available at Bucks Foot Clinic.
Heel pain is a common foot problem that can significantly impact your daily activities. Two of the most frequent causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. Understanding these conditions can help you seek effective relief and get back to your normal lifestyle.
Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that connects your heel bone to your toes becomes inflamed. This inflammation typically happens due to repetitive strain, overstretching, or excessive pressure.
A heel spur is a small bony growth or calcification that forms on the heel bone due to prolonged strain and stress on the foot muscles and ligaments. Heel spurs often develop alongside plantar fasciitis, as both conditions are related to repeated foot stress.
Typical symptoms include:

Corns might seem like a minor issue, but their impact on daily life can be anything but. These hardened patches of skin, caused by repeated pressure or friction, can turn each step into a painful ordeal. While DIY remedies promise quick fixes, they often lead to more harm than good. This article explores why corns hurt, why professional care is your best bet, and how to reclaim pain-free feet with expert podiatric treatment.
Corns develop in areas of the feet that bear repeated pressure, such as the tops of toes or the balls of your feet. Over time, this pressure causes the thickened skin to press into deeper tissues, irritating nerves and triggering pain. Here’s what makes corns so bothersome:
For those with conditions like diabetes or poor circulation, corns pose even greater risks, such as infections and ulcers, making professional care essential.
While it’s tempting to try over-the-counter solutions or home remedies, many DIY approaches can worsen the problem. Here’s why:
1. Pumice Stones and Over-Scrubbing
Using a pumice stone can be helpful, but overdoing it removes too much skin, leading to bleeding, sensitivity, and infection risks.
2. Corn Pads with Chemicals
These often contain salicylic acid, which softens the corn but also damages surrounding healthy skin, causing irritation or burns.
3. Sharp Tools
Attempting to cut or scrape a corn at home is risky. Deep cuts can lead to wounds, infections, and long-term scarring.
4. Ignoring the Root Cause

Keratin, the protein found in skin and hair, is what gives nails their structure. Keratinization is the process by which the cells at the nail’s base grow, harden, and stack on top of one another to produce nails. Genetics affects the strength, thickness, and rate of nail growth. An essential component of the nail structure is:
Nail Matrix: The space where the nail grows beneath the skin.
Plate: The portion of the nail that is visible and firm.
Nail Bed: The pink-colored skin beneath the nail plate caused by blood vessels.
The white, crescent-shaped region at the base of the nail plate is called the lunula.
The skin folds that hold the nail in place are called nail folds.
A thin layer of tissue called the cuticle forms the base of the nail plate.

FAQ
Ingrown toenails can be caused by several factors including improper nail trimming, wearing tight shoes, injury to the toenail, and genetic predisposition. Keeping nails trimmed straight across and avoiding tight footwear can help prevent them.
Common symptoms include pain, redness, swelling, and tenderness around the affected nail. In severe cases, you might notice pus or signs of infection.
For mild cases, soak your foot in warm water several times a day, keep the area clean, and avoid tight shoes. You can also gently lift the nail and place a small piece of cotton or dental floss under the edge to help it grow above the skin.
You should see a podiatrist if you experience severe pain, signs of infection (such as pus or increased redness and swelling), or if the ingrown toenail keeps recurring despite home treatment. People with diabetes or poor circulation should seek professional care promptly.
Bucks Foot Clinic offers various treatments, including partial nail avulsion (removal of the ingrown portion of the nail), total nail avulsion (removal of the entire nail in severe cases), and antibiotics for infected toenails. Our podiatrists will tailor the treatment to your specific needs.
The surgery for ingrown toenails is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort may occur after the anaesthesia wears off, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
To prevent ingrown toenails, trim your nails straight across, avoid cutting them too short, and wear shoes that fit properly with enough room for your toes. Regular foot care and check-ups at Buck Foot Clinic can also help prevent recurrence.

Toenails often don’t get the attention they deserve in our health routines. However, ignoring fungal toenail infections can lead to more than just cosmetic issues. Let’s delve into the health implications of untreated fungal toenail infections, examining how they can affect your overall well-being and why timely treatment is crucial.
What is a fungal infection in the toenail?
A fungal infection in the toenail, known medically as onychomycosis, occurs when fungi infiltrate the nail bed. This invasion can cause the toenail to become discolored, thickened, and brittle. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, making our feet a perfect habitat.
Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications
OTC antifungal creams, ointments, or nail polishes are often the first steps in treating fungal toenail infections. These products aim to halt fungal growth and are convenient for early-stage infections. However, success rates can vary, and persistent application is necessary for the best outcomes.
Prescription-Strength Topical Antifungals
If OTC treatments aren’t effective, healthcare professionals may prescribe stronger topical antifungal medications. These often contain higher concentrations of active ingredients like ciclopirox or efinaconazole, making them more potent against severe infections when used correctly.
Combination Creams
Some creams combine antifungal agents with moisturizers or essential oils. These products not only target the infection but also address issues like dryness or brittleness, offering a more holistic approach to toenail health.
Natural and Herbal Remedies
For those who prefer natural treatments, there are creams containing herbal ingredients such as tea tree oil, coconut oil, or neem oil. While some users report success, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before relying solely on these remedies.
Medicated Nail Lacquers
Medicated nail lacquers offer an alternative treatment by applying a solution directly to the affected nail. These lacquers, which often contain ciclopirox, form a protective layer that allows the medication to penetrate the nail and fight the infection.
Increased Risk of Spread
Ignoring a fungal toenail infection can lead to its spread to other nails or nearby skin. Fungi are highly contagious, and the risk of multiple infected nails increases with time.
Chronic Pain and Discomfort
As the infection worsens, chronic pain and discomfort can become part of your daily life. The thickening of the nail and pressure from shoes can cause ongoing pain.
Impaired Mobility
Severe fungal toenail infections can lead to physical changes in the toe, resulting in impaired mobility. This, in turn, can impact your overall quality of life.
Secondary Bacterial Infections
Untreated fungal infections can create an environment conducive to bacterial infections. The damaged nail structure can serve as an entry point for bacteria, increasing the risk of additional health issues.
Psychological Impact
Beyond physical symptoms, the appearance of fungal infections can significantly impact self-esteem and confidence, leading to emotional distress.

Are you struggling with stubborn verrucas on your feet? If you’re searching for effective “verruca treatment,” Bucks Foot Clinic in the UK, is here to help. Verrucas, also known as plantar warts, can be painful and persistent, but our team of skilled podiatrists offers comprehensive treatment solutions to help you regain healthy, smooth skin. In this blog, we’ll explore what verrucas are, how they can affect your feet, and the various treatment options available at our clinic. We’ll also discuss why Bucks Foot Clinic is the best choice for those seeking “verruca treatment in Beaconsfield” and surrounding areas.
Verrucas are warts that develop on the soles of the feet. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can be quite contagious. Verrucas often appear as small, rough growths on the skin and may have tiny black dots in the centre, which are small, clotted blood vessels. They can occur singly or in clusters and are often painful, especially when pressure is applied while walking or standing.
Verruca infections are highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with infected skin or surfaces. This makes public places such as swimming pools, communal showers, and gym floors common sites for transmission. The virus thrives in warm, moist environments, which is why it’s crucial to take preventive measures to avoid contracting or spreading verrucas.
At Bucks Foot Clinic, we offer a range of effective treatments for verrucas on feet. Our approach is tailored to each patient’s needs, ensuring optimal results and minimal discomfort. Here are some of the treatment options available:
1. Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a popular and effective treatment for verrucas. It involves freezing the verruca with liquid nitrogen, causing the infected tissue to die and eventually fall off. The procedure is quick and typically requires multiple sessions to completely remove the verruca.
2. Salicylic Acid Treatment
Salicylic acid is a common over-the-counter treatment for verrucas. At Bucks Foot Clinic, we use medical-grade salicylic acid to ensure higher effectiveness. This treatment involves applying the acid to the verruca to soften and remove the infected tissue gradually. It may require several applications over a few weeks.
3. Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is an advanced treatment option for stubborn verrucas. It uses targeted laser energy to destroy the infected tissue without damaging the surrounding healthy skin. This method is highly effective and often requires fewer sessions compared to other treatments.
4. Electrosurgery
Electrosurgery, or curettage, involves scraping off the verruca and using an electric needle to destroy any remaining infected tissue. This treatment is typically used for larger or more persistent verrucas and is performed under local anaesthesia to minimise discomfort.
5. Swift Microwave Therapy
Swift microwave therapy is a cutting-edge treatment for verrucas that utilises microwave energy to target the root cause of verruca infection. This treatment is highly effective, often providing significant results in just a few sessions. Swift therapy is quick, with minimal discomfort, and has a high success rate in treating persistent verrucas.
6. Topical Immunotherapy
For patients with resistant verrucas, topical immunotherapy may be an option. This treatment involves applying a chemical solution to the verruca to stimulate the body’s immune system to attack the virus. It can be effective for patients who have not responded to other treatments.

While over-the-counter treatments like salicylic acid can be effective for some, professional treatment is often needed for persistent or painful verrucas. Home treatments may not be as effective and can sometimes cause irritation or spread the infection.
The duration of treatment varies depending on the size and number of verrucas, as well as the chosen treatment method. Some treatments may require several sessions over a few weeks to months to fully eliminate the verruca.

People face various ailments, injuries and complications, etc. on a daily basis and they turn to a medical expert for advice and care. Injuries on the foot, and other such mishaps on the lower limbs have been a common part of everyone’s life as well. And there are various medical fields for various healthcare problems known to mankind. One such field is concerned with the treatment of the lower limbs such as the foot, ankles, etc
The specialist who carries out the medical treatment of the foot is called a podiatrist. Podiatrists can also handle sports injuries and other ailments affecting the foot and rest of the lower limbs.
Unlike Physicians or MDs, a podiatrist is a doctor who specialises and excels in podiatric medicine. They receive special training and education on ankle, foot and lower leg disorders.
In short, podiatrists are not technically like physicians but their training and education requirements are quite similar to that of the physicians.
To prepare for podiatry school, prospective podiatrists study biology, chemistry, and physics courses in college in addition to other science courses. The majority earn a bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related branch of study.
They then spend four years in podiatry school. They look at how your muscles, nerves, and bones interact to make you move. During their residency training, podiatrists acquire practical experience in medical facilities like hospitals and clinics. They must pass a series of board certification tests after finishing this course. The letters DPM, which stand for Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, are used after the name of a podiatrist who is completely licensed.
A podiatrist can suggest treatment after making a diagnosis. Depending on the nature and severity of the condition, a podiatrist may collaborate with a different expert or an entire healthcare team.Hence, here are some conditions podiatrists diagnose and provide treatment for for your general know-how:
●Injuries on foot. Injuries such as fractures, strains and sprains, etc. on the lower limbs.
●Diabetic foot disorders. Infections, nerve damage, neuropathy, ulcers, etc. faced by diabetic people.
●Foot Abnormalities. Structural abnormalities on the foot such as hammertoes and high arches.
●Skin Conditions. Warts and verrucas, corns and calluses, etc.
●Nail conditions. Fungal nails, ingrown nails, nail infections
●Pain and Inflammation on foot. Pain and inflammation due to arthritis or gout and such disorders.
Podiatrists begin as usual by first studying the medical history and the current case. Then they perform a basic checkup on the affected area on the foot. You may be asked to try and move your foot and fingers or walk around a little so the podiatrist can better understand the severity of the condition. Apart from that, podiatrists check for any swelling and discoloration on the skin.
Depending on initial checkup and findings, they may recommend that you get additional tests done before making a final diagnosis. Here are some tests that a podiatrist uses:
●Imaging tests. X-rays, ultrasounds, bone scans, CT scans, and MRI scans are all imaging examinations. These examinations can detect blood vessel blockages, bone fractures, and other structural issues.
●Blood Tests. You may need to get blood tests done to detect an infection or autoimmune illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis.
●Quantitative sensory testing. It measures how well the nerves can detect changes in temperature and vibration using a specialised computer system. This test is used by podiatrists to identify hypersensitivity, diabetic neuropathy, and other nerve diseases of the foot.
●Electromyography. It measures how well the muscles interact with and react to nerve impulses. During this, the podiatrist inserts one or more very thin needles known as electrodes, into the muscles to detect any reaction from them. Results from an abnormal EMG test indicate a nerve issue and can help your podiatrist determine the best course of treatment.
When you experience any of the following issues, you should consider seeing a podiatrist:
●Skin breaks or abrasions
●Wart-like growths
●Your soles have peeling and scaling.
●Pain on the foot
●Thickened or discoloured nails
The first appointment to a podiatrist will be quite simple and similar to that of any other doctor. Therefore, they will first discuss your medical history, current medications, and previous procedures in the conversation.
Moreover, they’ll examine your posture as well as your joints’ range of motion and shoe fit. Additionally, treatments for foot abnormalities, ingrown toenails, heel and lower back discomfort, circulation issues in the feet if you have diabetes, etc. are common on the initial visit.
To summarise, if you’re concerned about your foot care as well, Bucksfoot clinic has the best team of podiatrists in Little Chalfont for you. We offer the best modern treatments and care for foot conditions and complexities. Visit our website to learn more.

Verruca treatments have been very well-received among the masses recently. People searching “what are verrucas” and “Is a verruca contagious” on the internet, has led to verruca treatments’ popularity.
Most people develop verrucas at some point in their lives, according to research. Men are not as affected as women, though around 4-5% of the population suffers from them. Yet, children and teenagers are more likely to experience them than infants. In this article, we’ll learn about types of verruca treatments and other basic know-how about verrucas.
The warts have a solid appearance and may have little dots all over them. These are found on pressure points on the feet, such as the balls or heels. They appear flattened because of the pressure.
Most people with verrucas complain about pain when walking. Leg or back pain may result from altered walking posture brought on by pain from the verrucas in the pressure points of the feet.
Although verrucas can spread into the family, they are not hereditary. Verrucas are contagious and spread to multiple people at once. Verrucas transmit from person to person. Sharing public baths where individuals with verrucas have already showered is a common method of dissemination. Whenever the skin on the foot is injured, cut, or ulcerated in any way, infections are a result.
Spread may also happen if someone bites their nails, shaves, or suctions their fingers.
As a result, the same person’s disease spreads to several body parts.
Generally, you need not visit a healthcare professional to get rid of your verrucas. Verrucas are usually harmless and go away on their own without requiring any sort of treatment. In the case of adults, they may take some time to go away, for children it’s in about two years or so. For adults it can also take about 5 to 10 years which depends on various factors.
You can check with the local pharmacist for advice and any over-the-counter meds to help with your verrucas. Though it’s still better that you visit your GP or General Podiatrist for better diagnosis and advice.
Behold! the Unsightly Verruca’s Nemesis: The Swift Microwave Machine Swift is a proven solution that attacks verruca at its heart.
Verrucas can be treated with a variety of lotions, gels, etc. They are available without a prescription from a pharmacy. A component named Salicylic acid in many of the medicines, aids in removing the tough, outer covering of your verruca.
Although, there is a chance of irritation and scarring when using those products. Thus, avoid using salicylic acid treatments on your face or other major areas. If you have diabetes, are prone to ulcers, or have nerve damage, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using it. Word to the wise, always read the instructions given on the labels and manuals and avoid treating broken skin areas.
Using liquid nitrogen to freeze a wart will cause it to fall off, a process known as cryotherapy.
A podiatrist can provide cryotherapy, but depending on where you live, it might only be an option for private treatment at a clinic.
During cryotherapy treatment, your doctor uses a spray or a cotton bud to apply liquid nitrogen to your wart. Depending on the technique involved, the size, and the location of the wart, freezing a wart can take anywhere from five to thirty seconds. Up to six repetitions of the treatment may be required between every two to three weeks. It can be uncomfortable and can cause skin blistering or scarring, thus it isn’t advised for younger kids.
Like with most skin conditions and viruses, the most effective way to treat verrucas is to trigger the body’s immune system to allow it to heal. SWIFT microwave technology does the same when employed in the treatment. Its electromagnetic waves penetrate deep into the infected area and then trigger the immune system. This helps our immune system to become aware of the verrucas and to begin the self-healing process, while destroying the verruca.
Specialists such as dermatologists also work with podiatrists in treating verrucas. If you have verrucas/warts on your face, you need to have more tests, etc, then your podiatrist may refer you to them. Dermatologists may also recommend stronger doses of medications for oral intake or applying on the skin. Moreover, in the case of any medical condition or prior medical history, you may also need to visit the specialist for advice.
To summarise, there are various treatments if you’re dealing with verrucas and want them taken care of. Bucksfoot Clinic is one such professional podiatrist treatment centre for your concerns about your footcare. Visit our website to learn more about the best verruca treatment available in the UK.

A Common type of infection that’s plagued about 10% of the world’s population. In this article, learn more about Verrucas on feet and Verruca treatment.
A very common question people ask is “Is a verruca a sore?”. Verrucas aren’t really sores, but they can cause a feeling of soreness on your feet due to their uncomfortable positioning. In reality, verrucae are a type of wart that are formed by the HPV virus and they tend to be very contagious.
They are difficult to treat, persistent, and unsightly. Some can persevere for years, growing deeper and impacting more and more on daily activities. But like most infections, they can be removed.
These are often confused with corns. Corns are thick skin on your feet that are painful when you walk.
Verrucae and Warts are viral infections that cause think skins, and these hurt when you walk. Since they’re an infection, they are contagious.
Verruca/Warts can and do spread around the body and feet a lot of the time, they can be passed onto other people. This means that you can infect other people in the family, or can be infected by them. It is normal to get them when you share changing rooms or shower facilities (like swimming pools, or gyms) with other people.
pair of flip-flops or wet shoes when you go to the pools or to the changing room shower.
Behold! the Unsightly Verruca’s Nemesis: The Swift Microwave Machine Swift is a proven solution that attacks verruca at its heart.
While signaling the body’s immune system with its harmless electromagnetic waves to allow it to naturally fight against the virus and heal the affected area, SWIFT also works together to help destroy the verruca. Thankfully, the treatment takes up to 10 seconds per verruca.
Almost anyone who has stubborn warts and verrucas on feet can benefit this verruca treatment. There are contra-indications to Swift but outside these anyone who has warts/verrucas on their hands or feet can benefit.
Precautions
If any of the following apply to you, speak to your Podiatrist before treatment –
Cryosurgery is one of the other forms of treatments. Podiatrists can use chemical therapy (chemotherapy), where they use a selection of different chemicals and acids to treat the virus.
Podiatrists can use, dry needling, where they can force the blood in the body to fight the verruca naturally. This can remove the most stubborn verrucae. they also use homeopathy where we use natural algae to help the body fight the verruca.
Now that you’ve learned more about verrucae, hopefully you’ll be more mindful about the pointers we’ve given in brief about the prevention as well as treatment. Be sure to book an appointment with us regarding your verruca treatment and we’ll make sure you receive the best of care with our Swift treatment here in Little Chalfont and Amersham

The average adult walks about 75,000 miles in their lifetime, placing a tremendous amount of stress on their feet. Although they are crucial to keeping us moving, our feet aren’t frequently discussed in terms of health and welfare. (chiropdy treatments)
Age is closely correlated with primary care visits in the UK for musculoskeletal foot and ankle issues, peaking in the 65–74 year age range. Early foot maintenance and seeking medical attention for any problems as soon as you become aware of them might help avoid more serious problems in later life.
In this blog we’ll explore what chiropody is and what chiropdy treatments are. If you’re looking for a podiatrist or chiropody treatments in Chesham, Beaconfield or Amersham, book an appointment with Bucksfoot Clinic today.
Without further ado..
Chiropodists, often known as podiatrists, are qualified to treat injuries to the feet and lower limbs, whether they are a result of ongoing medical conditions you have or an isolated incident.
In addition to diagnosing and treating fractures, deformities, tumours, ulcers, and skin or nail problems, they can also prescribe the proper medication. Additionally, chiropodists can offer preventative care. Regular visits to a chiropodist can help you avoid further complications and needless agony by preventing many foot disorders.
A trip to the chiropodist resembles a trip to any other doctor in many ways. The specifics of your consultation will depend on the problem, but generally speaking, an evaluation of the problem will be followed by a treatment strategy.
Simple things like wearing the incorrect size shoes or getting into contact with someone who has athlete’s foot can cause certain problems. Other problems may be more complicated, such as pain in your feet when you walk, which may indicate a musculoskeletal issue that affects how your body moves.
Your risk of developing foot issues may also increase if you have certain medical conditions. Diabetes, for instance, can harm the nerves in the foot and limit blood flow there. Foot issues can also result from poor circulation brought on by other diseases like cardiovascular disease. Cuts and sores may not heal properly if your feet don’t have a healthy blood supply.
There are a few typical foot problems that people experience, but if they are not treated, some conditions can become very severe. You can contact a chiropodist who will properly identify and treat the problem rather than suffering from it and only utilising over-the-counter medication.
Verrucas are a good illustration of this. They are widespread and, if left untreated, can grow to be exceedingly painful and huge. A chiropodist can do cryotherapy, which freezes the verruca and ensures that the virus is dead and won’t spread further. You can also receive treatment for other common conditions like athlete’s foot, rough skin, corns, thickened or infected nails, cracked heels, and thickened nails.
Your chiropodist can do exams if you have discomfort when you walk but are unsure of the cause. These assessments can help you figure out what is causing your pain. The evaluation will concentrate on how your body moves and enable the chiropodist to suggest a remedy. Foot orthotics, which you put in your shoes, are frequently used to support normal walking function and, over time, reduce pain. Your chiropodist can provide advice on additional interventions that other solutions might offer, including as care from a physiotherapist.
A Few Common Chiropody Treatments
You might need to see a podiatrist for a variety of common foot ailments and infections. Anyone can experience painful, inconvenient conditions such as corns and calluses, verruca treatments, and ingrown toenails throughout their lifespan. You might require chiropody care if you notice anything wrong with the condition of your feet.
Simple nail trimming and foot soaks are just a couple of the personal foot care options that a chiropodist can provide in lieu of the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Podiatrists, who specialise in the foot, can pamper your feet from time to time in addition to helping to treat ailments.
Contact our fully licenced medical staff at Bucksfoot Clinic if you have a skin or nail condition on your foot that just won’t go away. Our chiropody treatments span from medical to basic foot care, and we can assess any potential issues with your feet and recommend the best course of action.
If your foot problems are more joint, muscular, or bone-related, a biomechanical analysis may be necessary. When something goes wrong with your biomechanics, it can have an impact on your complete range of motion. Biomechanics refers to all the parts of your body that enable it to move and operate. Your podiatrist will examine your lower leg, foot, ankle, or any other portion of your lower leg that is bothering you during a biomechanical examination and will provide advice on the best course of therapy.
You can request a general consultation from a fully licenced podiatrist if you merely want their professional advice on your foot health and what you can do to treat or alleviate your concerns. Whether you are experiencing foot discomfort, ankle troubles, or lower limb problems like shin splints, our HCPC registered podiatrists can expertly assess your condition and can set you up with the appropriate course of action.
Our podiatrists can help with any problem, no matter how big or minor. We offer first-rate chiropody services tailored to your requirements and condition, and our expert advice can help you choose the best course of action for your care.
Custom-made inserts called foot orthotics can be put inside your shoes to help with biomechanical issues all over your body. Hammertoes, bunions, and heel and arch pain are all common problems. Medically crafted orthotics can significantly alleviate whatever condition is troubling you and realign your foot to increase your mobility and comfort.
At Bucksfoot Clinic, we can give you custom-made insoles and orthotics to enhance the health of your feet and lower legs as a whole, giving you comfort and ease of mobility. Contact us to learn more about how our chiropody treatments in Chesham, Beaconsfield, an Amersham can benefit you.

Got a fungal nail infection/ingrown toenail infection that you just can’t seem to get rid of? Then nail surgery may just be right for you. The pain can be annoyingly unbearable, so why make it a recurring feeling when you can just get rid of it entirely? Nail surgery is the perfect fix to all your infection problems. You’ll never have to deal with redness around toenail again.
There are lots of questions surrounding nail surgery, however, and we’re here to clear them up for you. So, if you want to know more about what nail surgery is, who does nail surgery, how effective it is, and more, read on!
First, here are the most common reasons behind redness around toenail:
If you stub your toe or drop something on your toe, this could lead to redness around the toenail.. A red toe can also be caused by other injuries, such as persistent pressure or abrasion from an improperly fitting shoe. In this case, you’ll also feel pain in toenail in shoes.
Cellulitis, a common skin infection, can occur when bacteria that lives on your skin enters your skin itself.
Your skin may get inflamed when exposed to certain pollutants, like gasoline or detergents like soap and bleach.
Your skin can become inflamed when it comes into contact with an allergen, such as nickel or plants like poison ivy.
Athlete’s foot, sometimes called tinea pedis, is a fungal infection of the toes or feet.
A condition known as paronychia, an infection of the folds of your nails usually brought on by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria or a fungus, can result in toe pain and swelling. Nail infections like this can also be caused due to ingrown toenail that haven’t been treated correctly.
Now we can move on to more information about nail surgery..
Lots of people ask the question, “What is nail surgery?”. Nail surgery is considered a minor procedure. It is usually conducted under local anesthetic, to help alleviate pain and infection in toenails.
During nail surgery, a podiatrist might remove one or two sections from your nail, on each side. In some forms of nail surgery, your podiatrist may have to remove your whole nail, depending on the extent of infection / injury.
Once the nail surgery is over, the podiatrist will use a form of treatment to prevent the affected nail from growing again.
Now that you know what nail surgery is, you’re probably wondering who does nail surgery.
Nail surgery is done by certified professional Podiatrists. Never get nail surgery from anyone who is not professionally equipped to handle it.
Nail surgery generally is a permanent solution to your problem. Regrowth can occur occasionally, but this is in much less than 5% cases out of thousands.
There are a few common routine treatments that act as alternatives to nail surgery. They aren’t permanent solutions, however, and only help for immediate and short-term relief. A common treatment used is cutting the nail back, but the nail often regrows with the same issue.
Every patient is different and has a different pain-tolerance. This is why we aim to alleviate their pain as fast as possible, according to the treatment that suits them best. Though, when a patient comes in with a chronic infected nail, nail surgery is the only safe and viable option.
If you’re suffering from fungal nail infection or recurring ingrown toenails and redness around toenail, and are looking for a permanent solution, nail surgery may just be your best bet! Book an appointment with Bucksfoot Clinic for a consultation to see if nail surgery is the right option for you, and we’ll give you the best podiatric treatment in town!

Verruca Infection & Treatments are very common, and we see them in our patients almost on a daily basis. They’re a pretty simple issue to deal with, but they can often become painful and hard to manage if not properly cared for.
There are lots of questions surrounding verrucas on feet, one of the most common being “Do I have a verruca or a corn?”. We’re here to give you the answers you need. So, if you want to know more about verruca infection and verruca treatment, read on!
Verruca or verruca infections are a virus. It is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and is highly contagious. Verrucas on feet are commonly spotted on the soles of the areas around one’s toes. These viruses thrive in moist environments and tend to cyclically be outbreak in children at the park (like hand, foot, and mouth disease). Verrucas tend to look kind of like cauliflowers, but then they flatten up because of pressure when they are on the soles of your feet.
Sometimes verrucas can be painless, but more often than not they are very uncomfortable and even painful to deal with. They can disappear overnightan or can be persistent for years on end.
It’s very easy to confuse verrucas on feet for other types of warts and corns. That’s why it’s important to know the distinct symptoms of verrucae (yes, that’s the plural of verruca!). This way you can identify them and give them the correct form of verruca treatment.
There are some key identifying factors when it comes to Verrucas which can help you single them out from all these other ailments:
Now that you know more about the Verruca infection, it’d do you good to understand where it comes from so you can prevent it from happening to you. Especially if you have children or young adults at home since they’re the most prone and the virus is extremely contagious.
Verrucas are caused by HPV. Verruca infections can spread from person to person via direct skin contact or even just contact with surfaces contaminated with the virus. You’re also more likely to get infected if your skin is damaged or wet, so swimming pools and communal showers tend to be a breeding ground for verruca infections. Apart from infecting (or being infected by) others, you can even further infect yourself by touching unaffected areas of your body. The viral particles tend to spread when you scratch a verruca. As with most viruses, your chances of developing verruca infections runs high if you have a weak immune system.
Most people tend to confuse Verrucas for Corns. It’s a very common problem seen by Podiatrists everywhere. A lot of times, patients come in after “mistreatment” caused by the confusion. When you can’t tell if it’s a verruca or a corn, it’s probably best to see a medical professional (why not book an appointment with Bucks Foot Clinic?) before you treat it at home. The wrong treatment for the wrong lesion can sometimes even lead to more serious problems. So it’s best to know how to SPOT the difference between these spots.
Since you already know how you can tell if it’s a verruca on your feet, we won’t get into too much detail. In fact, we have an article specifically for this question alone. So, if you want to know if you’re dealing with a verruca or a corn, read this article of ours. It’ll give you better insight into properly identifying the differences between the two so you can tell if you’re dealing with a verruca or a corn with ease.
Now that you know a lot more about verrucas on feet and what causes them, you’d probably want to know how to go about verruca treatment.
There are many ways you can go about treating verrucas on your feet. Though they normally go away with time, if you find yourself plagued with verrucas on your feet and they’re either painful or just an eyesore, here’s a few treatments:
Cryotherapy is a very effective way to remove your verruca. It is the process in which your verruca is frozen with liquid nitrogen, which makes it fall off. If you’re interested in cryotherapy, please visit a podiatrist and never try to do this on your own. It can lead to scarring and is typically also mildly painful, so it’s not a great option for children and people who are sensitive to pain.
The best way to treat anything related to your feet is by visiting a podiatrist. They are experts at all things foot-related and will be able to treat your verruca with ease and painlessly. When you visit a podiatrist, they will most likely use SWIFT Machine Treatment to get rid of your verruca. SWIFT is a very quick and efficient way to treat verrucas, it’s in the name itself! SWIFT uses microwave energy for verruca removal. To learn more about what you can expect from SWIFT treatment, read our article on this topic!

There are many questions surrounding toenail fungus and verrucas on feet. In this blog, we’ll answer the main ones. Keep reading to learn more.
If you’re showing signs of discoloured toenails and other unpleasant symptoms, you may just be dealing with toenail fungus.
A fungal nail infection develops from the overgrowth of fungi in, under, or on the nail. It’s common knowledge that fungi thrive in warm and moist environments, so the nails on your feet have ideal conditions for fungi to naturally overpopulate. Most fungal nail infections are caused by the very same fungi that cause “athlete’s foot”, ringworm, and “jock itch”.
The rapid overpopulation of fungi that are already present in your body can cause nail infections. Fungal nail infections are quite communicable, so if you’ve come in contact with someone who had a fungal infection, you may have contracted it too. Toenails tend to be affected more than fingernails, since they’re usually confined to shoes, which are the ideal breeding grounds for these fungi.
Pedicures at nail salons can also lead to fungal nail infections, which is why you need to make sure the tools are cleaned and disinfected regularly and well. Tools like nail cutters and files can very easily spread fungal nail infections from person to person if they’re not sanitised properly.
Toenail fungus is a form of infection that basically travels through the cracks in your nail / the cuts on your skin. It can change the colour of your toenail and make it much thicker than normal. It can also be very painful to deal with. Since toes are usually kept warm and may be damp due to sweat, they act as the perfect breeding ground for fungus, allowing it to thrive in these conditions. There are different types of fungi and even yeast that can affect the different parts of your nail. When left without treatment, the fungus can spread to your skin, the other toenails, and sometimes even your fingernails!
A very common question that gets asked is “what does toenail fungus look like?”. It’s good to know the symptoms so you can know how to treat your fungal toenail.
What does toenail fungus look like, you ask? Here’s your answer:
A change in colour of your toenail, to either yellow, brown, and even white
Thickened and often misshapen looking toenail
Chalkiness / cloudiness in spots on your toenail
Your toenail is separated from your nail bed
Lots of breaks and cracks in one or multiple spots on your toenail
There are many ways toenail fungus can alter the visual appearance of your toenails. That’s why it’s important to know what it looks like, so you can treat it before it gets more serious.
If you find yourself noticing any of the above symptoms, you may just be dealing with toenail fungus and you should seek treatment with a podiatrist accordingly.
Verrucas are a type of wart that develop on your feet. This type of wart is specific to the feet and is surprisingly common. Verruca infections are usually harmless, and so many people aren’t even aware of their existence. You can either have a single verruca that develops on your foot, or you can also have a cluster of verrucae that covers a greater area on your foot.
Verruca infections are a result of a viral infection called the Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV for short. There are so many types of HPV, but in particular HPV 1, 2, and 4 are the subtypes that are most likely to lead to verrucae development.
Chances are you’ve had a Verruca before and just confused it for a corn or a wart. But there are some key identifying factors when it comes to Verrucas which can help you single them out from all these other ailments. Verrucas are actually an infection caused by HPV and can be painful in comparison to normal warts or corns. They tend to form on the soles of your feet and may have tiny black dots in the centre, where blood has clotted in tiny vessels on the surface of your skin.
They can be painful when you put weight on them, kind of like stepping on a needle. They also tend to look flat because of the constant pressure put on them. They even develop in clusters in some cases and can fuse together, forming “mosaic warts”.
Which, again, sound super fancy, but definitely aren’t a piece you’d put up in an art exhibit. They’re actually kind of grotesque, but are totally normal.
To sum it up, you know it’s Verrucas on your feet when:
There’s a black dot in the centre (in most cases)
The “wart” is oddly cauliflower-shaped
You feel a stinging “stepping-on-a-needle” type of pain when you apply pressure
The lump is small and rough
You may have multiple on your hands and around your mouth as well (in the case of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, or HFM for short, which is common in most children)
There are different ways you can go about verruca treatment. The most common ones are Salicylic acid, Cryotherapy, and SWIFT verruca treatment. Your podiatrist will be able to tell you which verruca treatment is best for you.
Here’s some information on each verruca treatment:
There are many creams, gels and medicated plasters for treating warts and verrucas. You can buy these over-the-counter, but only do so if you’re sure it’s a verruca infection. Most of these contain salicylic acid which is a key ingredient in treating verruca infections. Be careful when applying these medications, and try to use as little as possible in surrounding areas because it can cause irritation to healthy skin.
You can even protect the skin around the verruca infection with non-fragranced and natural petroleum jelly. Try not to get any of the treatment on broken skin. You can soften the area before-hand by soaking it in water and rubbing it to remove excess hard skin. Once dried, make sure to cover the affected area with a plaster. Apply the treatment according to your Podiatrist / Pharmacist’s advice.
This is the process of freezing your wart or verruca using liquid nitrogen so it falls off. Most pharmacists have OTC cryotherapy preparations that contain other gases, but these don’t normally work too well because they can’t freeze at temperatures as low as liquid nitrogen, which is why it’s better if you visit a Podiatrist to get this done (book an appointment with Bucks Foot Clinic today!). During cryotherapy, your doctor will apply the liquid nitrogen to your verruca using either a spray or a cotton bud. It usually takes between 5-30 seconds to freeze depending on the size and location and also the method used.
You may have to repeat the treatment multiple times till the verruca or wart eventually falls off. Cryotherapy, however, hasn’t been shown to work any better than salicylic acid and can often lead to blisters and scarring that can be painful, which is why it’s not recommended for younger children.
SWIFT is a relatively new technology that’s been developed in the UK, and has been licensed for treating verrucas by podiatrists all over. SWIFT uses microwave energy, delivered through a probe which is put on the skin to treat the affected area. With SWIFT Machine Treatment, you can get rid of multiple verrucas and warts in just one sitting, and it’s quick and efficient in doing so. The cherry on top is that you don’t require anaesthetics of dressings afterwards!
If you want to efficiently and permanently remove your verruca, we suggest SWIFT treatment. Most Podiatrists would opt for this treatment as it is a very efficient and good solution to the problem of verrucas on feet.
It’s always best to see a Podiatrist when facing any issues related to the feet. Especially if you have a condition like diabetes or other circulation-related illnesses. Ignoring a simple issue on your foot can lead to something much bigger and way worse in the long run. In some cases, a simple infection could lead to amputation (especially in the case of daibetic patients).
If you think you may have an issue like fungal toenail or verrucas on your feet, don’t hesitate and wait till it’s too late. Book an appointment with Bucksfoot Clinic for the best treatment you can get!
